Tractor Trailer Crash Forces Mandatory Evacuations in Upstate New York
About 80 homes were evacuated after a tractor trailer carrying compressed natural gas overturned on an upstate New York highway.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says one person died after the trailer crashed north of Binghamton on Interstate 88 around 1 a.m. Monday. He said emergency crews would vent or flare off the gas.
The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports residents in about 80 nearby homes were ordered to evacuate during the cleanup. The Chenango Valley Central School District and Chenango Forks Central School District were closed Monday due to the crash.
State transportation officials closed part of the interstate.
There was no additional information available on the fatality. The driver of the tractor trailer had earlier been reported injured in the crash.
