Rhode Island Restaurant Shut Down After Shooting

January 15, 2019

Providence, R.I., officials have temporarily shut down a restaurant where a patron opened fire.

The city Board of Licenses says they held an emergency meeting Sunday and approved a request from city police to shut down La Sonrisa Cafeteria for 72 hours, citing concern for public safety.

Police say officers were patrolling near the restaurant early Sunday morning when they heard a single gunshot.

Officers pursued a suspect at the scene, but they were unable to apprehend the person.

The restaurant owner told police an argument had ensued earlier, and security escorted a group outside. The owner says one person returned and opened fire, striking the frame of a door.

No injuries were reported.

The board is scheduled to discuss the restaurant at a meeting Wednesday.
