New York Bill Aims to Expand Contraception Insurance Coverage

Advocates, lawmakers, and physicians are calling for the passage of a bill that would provide insurance coverage for all FDA approved contraceptive drugs and products in New York.

The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act would guarantee co-pay free coverage, allow access to a full year’s worth of contraception at one time, and increase access to emergency contraception. It would also cover male contraceptive methods such as vasectomies.

Andrea Miller, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund, says Tuesday New York has one of the highest unintended pregnancy rates in the country.

The bill has bipartisan support and passed the state Assembly in January. It is now in the Senate’s Insurance committee. Advocates say the measure is “a no-brainer.” They’re optimistic it will pass this session.
