5 New Jerseyans Charged With Filing False Applications for Sandy Funds

Five people are charged in New Jersey with filing false applications for Superstorm Sandy relief funds.

Prosecutors allege the suspects, in most cases, sought money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In many cases, prosecutors say they also applied for funds from a Sandy relief program funded by Housing and Urban Development, low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration, or assistance provided by the state’s Human Services Department.

The amount of the funds obtained ranged from $32,759 to $174,051.

If convicted, the suspects would face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $150,000.
