Delaware Extends Driving Privileges to Undocumented Immigrants

Dozens of people in Delaware have begun the process of obtaining a new state-issued card that will give driving privileges to those in the country illegally.

The News Journal of Wilmington, Delaware, reports that applications became available on Sunday, six months after the program was signed into law by the General Assembly.

As of Tuesday, 35 people had begun the process of submitting fingerprints to the State Bureau of Identification, demonstrating Delaware state taxes have been filed during the previous two years and showing valid identification from their home country. Applicants then have to pass the same rules as others getting a license, including passing a test and meeting insurance requirements.

Delaware is the 12th state to extend driving privileges to qualified people who are in the U.S. illegally.
