XL’s McGavick Receives St. John’s 2014 Insurance Leader of the Year Award

January 23, 2015

St. John’s University’s School of Risk Management (SRM) in New York hosted its 20th Annual Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner on Jan. 21 in honor of Mike McGavick, chief executive officer of XL Group plc.

The event, held at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City, raised more than $2.5 million — a new record — with all proceeds supporting student scholarships and program initiatives for the School of Risk Management.

The Insurance Leader of the Year Award, presented annually since 1995, recognizes the contributions of outstanding individuals whose leadership in the worldwide insurance and financial services industry sets them apart from their peers, the School of Risk Management said.

During the ceremony, Brandon W. Sweitzer, dean of the School of Risk Management, also recognized and thanked Brian Duperreault, CEO of Hamilton Insurance Group and chairman of the SRM Board of Overseers for his 20 years of service to St. John’s University. Duperreault will step down from his role on SRM’s Board of Overseers this year.

The 2014 Insurance Leader of the Year Award Selection Committee is chaired by Ellen Thrower, professor emerita and retired executive director of the School of Risk Management, and includes George Bernstein of The Sam Bernstein Law Firm; Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute; Joseph Mauriello, retired deputy chairman and COO of KPMG LLP; Michael Morrissey, president and CEO of the International Insurance Society; Patrick Shouvlin, retired partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP; and Peter Walker, director of McKinsey & Company.

Last year, the School of Risk Management honored Robert H. Benmosche, former president and CEO of American International Group Inc., as its Insurance Leader of the Year.

The School of Risk Management was founded in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York and over the years evolved into The College of Insurance (TCI). In 2001, TCI merged with St. John’s University, becoming a school of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. It awards undergraduate, M.B.A., and M.S. degrees in the insurance, risk management, and actuarial science disciplines. Through its Center for Professional Education, it also provides education, training, and consulting services to the industry, governments, and regulators.
