In NYC, 17 Students a Day Sent to ER With Mental Health Issues: Study
New Department of Education figures show that New York City schools made 3,600 calls to the 911 emergency system to deal with non-suicide-related mental health problems during the last school year.
That’s 17 students a day who were sent to the emergency room with emotional problems.
The Daily News says school officials acknowledged that calls to 911 have risen. They say they’re working to reduce the use of ambulances in those situations.
DOE spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said the agency is working with the nonprofit Mental Health CBO to increase screenings and enhance services.
The Legal Services NYC-Bronx is suing the city for more data on the problem.
