Virginia University Settles Student Lawsuit Over Rape
A lawsuit filed against the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia by a former student who was raped on campus has been settled.
Assistant Attorney General John Gilbody told the state Division of Risk and Insurance Management in a July 13 letter that Mary Washington President Rick Hurley had approved the $7,500 settlement.
The lawsuit had sought $10 million in damages. The state also was a defendant because the university is a state agency.
A federal judge ruled in March that the university wasn’t liable for criminal acts on its property.
According to the lawsuit, the student was sexually assaulted in a school parking garage in October 2008. The lawsuit claimed the university was negligent.
