Rhode Island Considers Cyberbullying Law

Rhode Island lawmakers are reviewing legislation creating a single statewide standard to address cyberbullying in schools.

The policy would offer procedures for teachers and administrators to use when responding to bullying reports, notifying parents and disciplining students.

The proposal is the work of a task force set up to study what educators say is a growing problem of students using email, text messages and social networking sites to bully or humiliate their peers.

It would be up to the state’s Department of Education to craft the details of the statewide policy.

The proposal was scheduled to be the subject of a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday evening.
