Virginia School Expects $4.4M Insurance Payment for Roof Collapse

Montgomery County, Virginia says it expects to get $4.4 million from its insurance carrier for the collapse of the Blacksburg High School gym roof last February.

The Roanoke Times reports that the anticipated insurance payment is included in the county’s 2010 financial report. The county already has set aside $4.8 million to repair the roof and start two other projects.

Combined, the projects are expected to cost $125 million. The county is aiming to raise at least $100 million by selling vacant school properties, rezoning and raising taxes.

The gym was demolished in May. Engineering documents have suggested the collapse was caused by cracks and a settling foundation.
