Connecticut High School Ex-Sprinter Settles $325K Suit Against Town

A former student at East Lyme High School in Connecticut who needed emergency brain surgery after crashing into a cement wall during indoor track practice has settled a lawsuit against the town for $325,000.

Nicholas Furlani sued the town, the education board, his coach and other officials after hitting the wall head first during a practice in school hallways in December 2007. He sought damages to cover medical and dental costs and emotional distress.

He said in his suit that his coach taught sprinters to put their heads down at the end of close races.

A lawyer for the now 21-year-old Furlani tells The Day of New London that he’s pleased the school admitted responsibility.

A lawyer for the town says thethe settlement is not an admission of liability.
