Connecticut Insurance Regulators Requiring Data Breach Notification

Five days. That’s how quickly agents and insurers must now notify Connecticut insurance regulators about a possible leak of clients’ personal information.

The new bulletin, released earlier this month, follows a string of incidents in the Nutmeg State in which insurance companies, as well as a slew of public agencies, mistakenly lost track of hard drives or files containing client information.

Health insurers in particular have been had a few high-profile incidents — including one by HealthNet of Connecticut, which earlier this year paid a $250K fine for losing 450,000 Connecticut residents’ information — but insurance agents and insurers that deal with property/casualty lines are also subject to the five-day rule.
