Worker Killed in Accident on New York City Bridge

A worker is dead after a construction accident on New York City’s Throgs Neck Bridge.

Police say 48-year-old William Barnes was struck by the boom of a small crane mounted on the back of a truck. The cable snapped, pinning him to the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The northbound lanes of the bridge that connects Queens to the Bronx were briefly closed, but have since reopened.

The bridge is undergoing renovation this summer, and the work has been plagued by trouble. In July, a fire started by a worker’s blowtorch shut down the bridge. Some sections didn’t reopen to heavy trucks until recent weeks.
