New York OKs Online Course for Defensive Driving

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has approved an online defensive-driving course that will qualify drivers for insurance discounts, according to the company offering the course.

The Improv Aware Driver Course, recently approved in New York, was first introduced in the 1980s as “an interactive and fun option” for Los Angeles motorists. The online course uses what its designers call an “edutainment” approach, which emphasizes instruction through entertainment.

The online course consists of 10 modules that feature a combination of humorous, YouTube-style video clips as well as text and graphics covering a variety of driving subjects ranging from basic traffic laws to more serious issues like DUI and seat belt use.

New York drivers who pass the course qualify for a mandatory 10 percent, three-year insurance discount and receive a four-point reduction on their driving record.

“New Yorkers not only benefit from… discount in a state with one of the steepest insurance rates in the U.S., but they can do so with ease and comfort simply by logging on from their computer any time they like,” said Improv Aware founder Gary Alexander.
