Worker Killed in Explosion at New Jersey Business

May 18, 2009

Police say a longtime employee at a New Jersey welding supplies shop was killed when a 60-pound oxygen tank he was filling exploded.

The force of the blast last Wednesday morning at the J.W. Goodliffe and Son building in Linden damaged a door and a concrete block wall. Nine other people were in the building, but no one else was injured.

The company fills tanks with industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and acetylene.

The 60-year-old victim, Thomas Coon, had worked at the shop for more than 30 years. His hometown was not immediately available.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
