Restroom Access Bill Heads to Connecticut House

Two Connecticut legislative committees have endorsed a proposal giving people with certain medical conditions the right to use employee bathrooms in private businesses.

Several lawmakers say they have concerns about the bill, though, including potential liability to companies, their insurance and handicap access.

Advocates say access is important for people with Crohn’s disease and other bowel conditions whose symptoms can come on quickly.

The proposal would exempt businesses when less than three employees are on duty; when a public bathroom is nearby; and when the employee restroom is located where public access jeopardizes the security of the business.

Illinois and New Jersey already have similar laws. Connecticut’s bill now heads to the state House for consideration.
