Massachusetts License Plate Scam Stirs Confusion
A flyer falsely claiming that the state’s 25-year-old green motor vehicle tags had to be replaced has started a run at the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Registrar Rachel Kaprielia said last week her office has been trying to inform motorists for more than a month that the old-fashioned Massachusetts license plates are still valid.
A flyer, which had been circulating inspection stations, insurance agencies and dealerships, wrongly told drivers they had until Dec. 31 to swap the old tags for new plates with red letters and numbers, or face a $65 fine.
Kaprielian said all plates are valid as long as they can be read from 60 feet away.
