Program to Catch Philly Red-Light Runners Extended

December 14, 2007

A program in Philadelphia that uses cameras installed atop traffic signals to photograph motorists who run red lights would be extended to 2011 under a bill passed by the House 135-57.

A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the number of motorists running red lights at two particularly dangerous intersections using the cameras decreased by 96 percent since the program began in 2005.

The bill goes to Gov. Ed Rendell, who said Wednesday he will sign it.
