Lloyd’s Dropped from R.I. Nightclub Suit

December 12, 2005

A federal judge in Rhode Island has ordered Lloyd’s of London dropped from a civil lawsuit filed by victims of the 2003 fire at the Station nightclub.

Finding that the insurance policy issued to nightclub owner Michael Derderian was not in force at the time of the fire, Senior Judge Ronald Lagueux dismissed the claim against Lloyd’s.

More than 200 people are suing nightclub owners Jeffrey and Michael Derderian as well as others. The victims’ suit had claimed that Lloyd’s did not adequately inspect the nightclub for safety hazards and code violations prior oto the blaze that killed 100 people in a West Warwick nightclub and injured 200 others.

The suit is being heard in the U.S. District Court District of Rhode Island.
