Boston’s AIR Wins WRMA Temperature Prediction Contest

Boston’s AIR Worldwide Corporation, a leading catastrophe and weather risk modeling company, announced that it had won the Weather Risk Management Association (WRMA) forecasting contest at the organization’s annual meeting held last week in Coral Gables, Florida.

AIR, which is now part of New Jersey-based Insurance Services Office Inc., used its “ClimateCast(TM) methodology,” to predict that the average daily temperature in Miami from June 1-5 would be 83.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The actual average temperature for the five-day period was 83.3 degrees.

Senior research meteorologist Mark Gibbas competed against 30 other “world-class meteorologists from some of the top weather risk organizations in the world,” who were also submitted predictions a week in advance of the conference.

“Accurate weather and climate information is a critical element for operational planners and risk managers in a variety of industries,” Gibbas stated. “The WRMA award is a tremendous validation of our climate prediction approach used in ClimateCast. It shows that businesses can rely on AIR to provide the highest quality weather and climate information to make critical decisions.”
