Maryland Seeks Federal Aid for Tornado Cleanup

In an effort to receive Federal assistance, Maryland Governor Parris Glendening asked that Prince George’s and Howard Counties be declared disaster areas following the extensive damages caused by a tornado last week.

While most of the estimated $70 million in losses will be paid by insurers, the state needs an estimated $711,000 to help in cleaning up the damages, and to begin restoring buildings and infrastructure at the University of Maryland, which was hard hit by the storm. Two sisters on the campus were killed when the storm lifted their car off the ground, and slammed it into nearby woods.
