Mass. Regulators Back Auto Cut

Massachusetts regulators are recommending a 14.1 percent auto insurance rate cut for 2001. The recommendation, which contrasts with the industry’s suggested 2.5 percent increase, could lead to a final decision by Commissioner Linda Ruthardt to slash rates by as much as 10 percent.

Insurers warn that a big cut could force some out of business. Industry experts say Rughardt’s decision will likely be close to the regulators’ recommendation. The State Rating Bureau’s recommendation would save the average policyholder about $135 a year.
