Hartford Financial Services Group appointed Tom Tucker as chief underwriting officer of commercial markets and head of specialty casualty. He comes from American International Group’s Chartis, where he was chief underwriter and chief risk officer for its U.S. operations. At The Hartford, Tucker will oversee underwriting across commercial markets and lead The Hartford’s specialty casualty segment. The Hartford also said Gary Thompson will lead middle market sales and distribution, in addition to his previous responsibilities as head of middle market product and underwriting. The Hartford also appointed Mike Concannon as head of the group benefits segment, succeeding Ron Gendreau who will retire later this year after a transition period.
American International Group’s Chartis placed its claims unit and operations and systems unit under a single management structure and appointed Eric Martinez to lead the combined management team. Martinez previously served as CEO of United Guaranty, AIG’s mortgage insurance unit. He succeeds Charles Schader, who assumes the newly created position of senior vice president, applied research. Kim Garland will succeed Martinez as CEO at United Guaranty. Garland was United Guaranty’s chief operating officer.
Keystone Insurers Group, a franchisor of insurance agencies headquartered in Northumberland, Penn., promoted Barbara Kressler to vice president of its risk solutions division. In her new role, Kressler will be responsible for all internal operations including financial oversight, partner relationships, carrier interactions and the management of staff. Kressler joined Keystone Insurers Group in 2005 as assistant vice president.
Willis North America, a unit of Willis Group Holdings, appointed Sean McGroarty as New York-based national surety leader of Willis North America construction practice. Previously, McGroarty served as senior vice president and head of international surety with Zurich Financial Services.
Inland Marine Underwriters Association voted Swiss Re America senior vice president Peter Opinante to assume the chairmanship earlier than had been scheduled. Opinante fills the seat vacated by Sophia Philips who recently tendered her resignation for personal reasons. Opinante was scheduled to assume the chairmanship this May. He will now serve for an additional four months in addition to his previously scheduled two-year term.
Starr Companies appointed Bob Coords as head of Starr Specialty Reinsurance, a division of Starr Indemnity & Liability Company. Coords comes from Chartis where he was president of the reinsurance solutions division.
TD Insurance, a subsidiary of TD Bank, appointed Charles Maleski as vice president, regional group practice leader for employee benefits in the Greater Philadelphia marketplace. Previouly, Maleski served for four years at Bank of America as a senior vice president and team leader of the Philadelphia market. Also, TD Insurance promoted David Lofstrom to vice president of U.S. commercial sales and product development. He was vice president of business development in Massachusetts for TD Insurance.
USI Insurance Services, an insurance brokerage firm in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., announced two additions to the New York Metro team: Robert Reers as president and Susan Fanciullo as senior vice president of operations. Reers spent the last four years as USI’s national employee benefit practice leader. Fanciullo previously was vice president of national accounts for Anthem BCBS.
General Re Corp. in Stamford, Conn., announced that Patricia Roberts retired from her role as president and CEO of General Star Management Co. and Genesis Management and Insurance Services Corp. Robert Jones, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Genesis, has been named president and CEO of both entities.
