Zenith National Insurance Corp. has hired Janet Frank as president and chief operating officer of the workers’ compensation writer’s principal operating subsidiary, Zenith Insurance Co. She will also be an executive vice president of Zenith National Insurance Corp.
Frank most recently served as president and chief CEO of the California State Compensation Insurance Fund from October 2007 to October 2009. In 2009, Frank said she was stepping down from her role at SCIF too care for her mother, who was seriously ill. Prior to joining the Fund, she was executive vice president of North American field operations for CNA Financial.
Jack D. Miller, currently the president and chief operating officer of Zenith Insurance Co., will become its vice chairman and will be responsible for strategic matters, including expanding the company’s agricultural business to offer lines of insurance other than workers’ compensation.
Virginia-based specialty insurer Markel Corp. announced that its president and chief operating officer, Paul W. Springman, has resigned to pursue other interests. Springman had been on a leave of absence since late October for personal reasons.
Markel Corp. also announced that it has promoted John K. Latham to managing director, regional wholesale operations. Latham will oversee Markel’s regional offices located in Virginia, Texas, Arizona, California, Illinois and New Jersey. In addition to his new role, he will continue to oversee the Southeast Region headquartered in Richmond, Va. Latham has 43 years of experience in the insurance industry and he has been with Markel for the past seven years where he has held several leadership roles including president of Markel Re and chief information officer. Prior to joining Markel, he was president of Colony Insurance Companies.
Florida-based insurance agency giant Brown & Brown, Inc. said that Jim W. Henderson, its vice chairman, chief operating officer and a member of its board of directors, will retire effective in August 2010. Henderson will not seek re-election to the company’s board of directors in April. Henderson has served in various leadership capacities with Brown & Brown and its predecessor for the past 25 years, including chief financial officer, profit center leader of its Daytona Beach, Florida retail operations, senior vice president, executive vice president and president. Prior to joining Brown & Brown, he served as senior vice president and treasurer of the Ormond Reinsurance Group.
West Point, Ga.-based independent insurance brokerage J. Smith Lanier & Co. has hired Michael Andrews as director of Information Technology. Andrews has operated as an independent information technology consultant since 2007. He also worked as the program manager for the state of North Carolina Child Support Collections.
Florida-based insurer United Insurance Holdings Corp. has appointed Joseph R. Peiso as chief financial officer. Peiso has 25 years of experience in the property/casualty insurance industry. He most recently served as a consultant to the insurance industry with Sarasota Bay Insurance Managers.
The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America (the Big “I”) named Lauren Cialone as senior director of federal government affairs and promoted John Prible to vice president of federal government affairs.
Cialone previously served as an assistant to Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., who sits on the House Financial Services Committee. She also worked for Senator Evan Bayh, D-Ind., member of the Senate Banking Committee.
Prible joined the Big “I” team as assistant vice president for federal government affairs in 2006. Prior to that, Prible was the director of government affairs for the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts. He worked for former Rep. Darlene Hooley, D-Ore., and former Rep. Jim Davis, D-Fla.
