Lloyd’s of London has selected an insurance outsider, Richard Ward, former head of the London-based International Petroleum Exchange, as its new chief executive officer. He spent six years as CEO of IPE, which has been re-branded as ICE Futures, in advance of the parent company listing on the NYSE in November 2005.

Lloyd’s began the search for a new CEO following the resignation of Nick Prettejohn last December, when he left to take over Prudential’s U.K. operations.

Ward has a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Exeter University. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a member of the Royal Institution and the Institute of Directors. He is a non-Executive Director of LCH.Clearnet, formerly the London Clearing House.

The appointment is subject to his formal appointment to the Council of Lloyd’s and confirmation of that appointment by the Governor of the Bank of England. The appointment is also subject to approval by the Financial Services Authority. Ward will start work at Lloyd’s on April 24.

Lighthouse Underwriters, an Anandale-Va.-based program underwriting company, announced that Sean Gormley has been promoted to senior vice president. In this position he will be responsible for the day-to-day operations at Lighthouse. Lighthouse recently was acquired by U.S. Risk Insurance Group, retaining the Lighthouse name and continuing to manage specialty programs and market them through retail agents and brokers.

Gormley joined Lighthouse 11 years ago and most recently served as vice president and chief operating officer, managing the administrative functions and expenses of Lighthouse. Gormley also has held the position of program director of Lighthouse’s StaffPak program, and was responsible for the program’s formation and growth. Prior to joining Lighthouse, he was with The Eagle Companies.

Insurance broker Beecher Carlson has expanded its national energy team with the appointment of Patrick Stumbras as managing director. Stumbras brings 17 years experience to Beecher Carlson with expertise in the power generation industry. He will focus on the development and management of energy accounts and operate from Beecher Carlson’s Boston office. Prior to joining Beecher Carlson, Stumbras served as account manager at McGriff, Seibels & Williams. Prior to that, he was with Marsh.

Wayne Asselin is bringing his 25 years of insurance experience to Doorley Insurance Agency in East Greenwich, R.I. As commercial lines account manager, Asselin will maintain support relationships with commercial lines clients. Prior to joining Doorley, he worked for USI Holdings Corporation in New York.

Lauren Vadeboncoeur has also joined Doorley Agency as an office assistant. In her position, she is responsible for assisting with customer service, and clerical and receptionist duties for the agency. Prior to joining Doorley Insurance Agency, she held several sales positions.

Integro in New York has appointed Gregory DiPrato and Valerie Schmalzried as managing principals for the company’s Property Practice. DiPrato has more than 26 years of property brokerage experience, most recently serving as an executive vice president for Aon’s National Property Practice. He has also held positions with Marsh, Sedgwick James and IRI.

Schmalzried has 25 years of property brokerage experience, most recently serving as managing director of Aon Risk Services’ National Property Practice. She has also held various positions with Marsh.

American International Group Inc. has appointed Charles Williamson as president of the AIG Private Client Group, which serves the insurance and risk management needs of high net worth individuals. He succeeds Ross Buchmueller, who has left the organization.

Christopher L. Sparro, who had served as the zonal executive for Domestic General Insurance in the AIG greater New York region, succeeds Williamson as president of AIG WorldSource, which serves the insurance needs of U.S.-based clients with international exposures as well as foreign clients with U.S. exposures.

Douglas M. Worman, who had been president of the public company management liability division of AIG’s National Union Fire Insurance Company, succeeds Sparro as zonal executive for the Greater New York region.

Williamson joined the AIG Companies in 1988 and has served as senior vice president, domestic brokerage group sales and marketing, executive vice president of the excess casualty unit of AIG’s American Home Assurance Company, and senior vice president, casualty, for AIG Risk Management.

Sparro joined the AIG Companies in 1990 and has held several senior level positions in National Union’s management liability division, as well as president of AIG’s Domestic Brokerage Group middle market division and commercial accounts division.

Worman, who joined National Union in 1992 as a management liability underwriter, had held positions of increasing responsibility within National Union.

Acordia Inc., a Wells Fargo Company, has promoted Eva Durkin to the position of vice president of client services. Durkin previously served as assistant vice president for Acordia’s Boston branch. In addition to her account management responsibilities for a book of large and mid-size risk management accounts, her new duties will include leading a team of assistant account executives for the Commercial Lines Department. Durkin joined Acordia in 1998 in the Commercial Lines Department.

John R. Glancy has been named chief underwriting officer for XL Insurance’s Global Professional operations. He previously served as chief operating officer of its Design Professional unit. XL Insurance’s Global Professional operations provide professional indemnity, directors and officers liability insurance, employment practices liability and management liability on both a primary and excess basis.

Glancy will take over for Rich Banas, who is leaving the company to pursue other interests, but who will remain on staff until March 31. Before XL Insurance, Glancy was with Royal & SunAlliance, USA.
