InVEST, an education program that develops a diverse pool of insurance professionals and informed consumers by educating high school and community college students on insurance, financial services and risk management, recently announced the addition of three members to its board of directors. They include: Nancy Baily, president and CEO of First Floridian, a St. Paul Travelers Company, Tampa, Fla.; Loree Toedman, assistant vice president, Sales and Agency Operations, Allstate Insurance Company, Northbrook, Ill.; and Kevin Mangan, independent agent, Hugh Cotton Insurance, Orlando, Fla.

B. Eric Hempelman has been appointed executive vice president and COO of Uni-Ter Underwriting Management Corp., the Atlanta-based member of the U.S. RE Group that provides underwriting management and insurance services to health care providers. Hempelman served in senior management positions at Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland, NCRIC, American Physician’s Capital, and others. In various assignments, Hempelman has managed underwriting, marketing, claims, risk management, and legal departments.


St. Paul Travelers
announced that Kenneth Spence III has been named senior vice president and general counsel.

Most recently, Spence was vice president of the Legal Services Division and deputy general counsel, responsible for the company’s non-claim litigation and regulatory and underwriting legal support. Prior to that, he was vice president of corporate litigation for the St. Paul Cos. In 1998, he joined St. Paul from USF&G when the companies merged. From 1983 to 1996, Spence served in the litigation department of Miles & Stockbridge in Baltimore. He was a partner of that firm from 1990 to 1996.

ACE USA, the U.S.-based retail operating division of The ACE Group of Companies, announced the appointment of Frank Mike-Mayer, senior vice president, to lead the ACE USA Construction Group.

Based in New York City, Mike-Mayer will be responsible for The ACE USA Construction underwriting practice, which is staffed by a team of construction professionals to address the unique insurance needs of builders and contractors. Mike-Mayer will report to William Curcio, president of ACE Risk Management.

ACE Risk Management offers comprehensive risk management programs and services designed and customized to assist companies in any industry deal with the significant costs of financing and managing risk.

With more than 25 years risk management and underwriting experience with emphasis on the construction segment, Mike-Mayer joins ACE USA from Zurich NA, where he served as senior vice president, Field Operations, Construction.

Florida-based Weiss Ratings Inc. named Bruce Fador president and CEO.

Between 1992 and 1998, Fador was president and CEO of Thomson First Call, which distributes research to Wall Street, where he created several new products and business units. Fador was also reportedly instrumental in the growth of the company’s global, online distribution network for financial research.

The Cooper Gay Group, an independent insurance and reinsurance broker, announced that Mary Glass has joined its Birmingham, Ala. office as an assistant vice president. Her addition complements the growing staff in Birmingham (3000 Riverchase Galleria), which opened in June.

Previously, Glass was with Gresham & Associates in Birmingham, producing and marketing multiple
lines of wholesale insurance. Prior to that she was in the wholesale intermediary industry, including senior positions with Stuart Smith (Nashville), E & S Facilities (Birmingham) and John Lloyd and Company (Birmingham).

Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd. announced that Aspen Specialty Insurance Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary, will open an office in Atlanta. Janet Lovell will lead underwriting efforts in Georgia.

Lovell most recently served as Excess and Surplus underwriting manager at General Electric Insurance. Prior to that, she was Atlanta branch manager with The Hartford/First State Management Co.

Aspen Specialty writes a focused book of property and casualty surplus lines business, through the U.S. wholesale surplus lines broker network.


ABRA Auto Body & Glass
, a national damaged vehicle repair company, has promoted Scott Krohn to regional vice president. Krohn’s main responsibility is to establish and meet financial, team member satisfaction and customer satisfaction goals for 23 ABRA repair centers in Tennessee and Georgia. The two markets will share training and support resources emphasizing a high level of consistency and performance.

Krohn joined ABRA in 1996 as general manager of its Marshall, Minnesota repair center. He became franchise district manager in 1999, and in 2000 was promoted to Minnesota operations manager of 10 of Minnesota’s 20 corporate-owned repair centers.

In April 2001, Krohn transferred to ABRA’s Tennessee market as operations manager of seven area centers, and was named vice president of ABRA-Tennessee in April 2002.


The National Association of Mutual Insurance Cos. (NAMIC)
named Bart Anderson senior vice president of member services and communications.

Anderson has more than 16 years of insurance management experience. Immediately prior to joining NAMIC, he served as the director of Nursing Knowledge International (NKI). He also worked as marketing manager for AIG Specialty Auto and manager of AiNetwork, an AIG enterprise headquartered in Alpharetta, Ga.
