TDI ISSUES MOLD CLAIMS GUIDE
Texas Insurance Commissioner Jose Montemayor has authorized the release of a new reference brochure, “Effectively Handling Water Damage and Mold Claims: A Consumer Guide,” for consumers and insurers. In letters sent to CEOs of property and casualty carriers, Montemayor explained that the brochure is intended to reverse the surge in mold-related claims in Texas, and lists suggested practices for carriers responding to water and mold damage claims. The guide was developed using input from the Advisory Task Force for Mold-Related Claims appointed by the commissioner Jan. 11. Along with the brochure, Montemayor issued a bulletin that requires insurers to inform customers at renewal time for their residential policies of any changes in the types of coverage and premium costs those customers may incur. Montemayor also stated he expects insurers to cooperate in the effort to streamline claims handling procedures and to respond to water damage claims in accordance with the suggested practices, whenever possible. Copies of the guide may be downloaded from TDI’s Web site, www.tdi.state.tx.us.
