HIGHLANDS SUES
The former insurance unit of Dallas-based Halliburton Co. is suing the energy services, engineering and construction company over 22,000 asbestos claims incurred before but not filed until after the unit’s spin-off. Highlands Insurance Group, and its Texas unit, Highlands Insurance Co., have sued Halliburton and its subsidiary, Brown & Root, claiming the companies knew millions of dollars worth of Brown & Root claims would be submitted to Highlands shortly after the spin-off.
Highlands claims Halliburton did not disclose any information about the potential for asbestos claims prior to the company’s spin-off. Highlands is seeking $5 million in damages from Brown & Root and is asking that Halliburton pay any Brown & Root insurance claims.
