$10.2 Million

The Kansas Insurance Department recovered $10.2 million for consumers last year, which is 32 percent less than it recovered in 2009. But the agency said the number of complaints from consumers about insurance companies also declined. The department recovered $15 million in 2009. The amount recovered for consumers by the agency peaked in 2007 at about $15.1 million. Last year’s total was the lowest since 2003. The department said it received about 3,800 complaints in 2010, down roughly 11 percent from 2009.

3,344

The Ohio Department of Insurance announced that its fifth annual Ohio Medical Professional Liability Closed Claim Report shows a total of 3,344 medical professional liability claims were closed in 2009. Claims that generated an indemnity payment, which is the amount of compensation paid on behalf of each defendant to a claimant, averaged $322,158 per closed claim. The department used data collected from entities providing medical professional liability coverage to Ohio health care providers and health care facilities to compile the report.

$404 Million

Workplace discrimination complaints against private sector firms hit an all time high in 2010, with the U.S. Equal Employment opportunity Commission (EEOC) reporting a total of 99,922 fiscal year 2010 filings. That was a 7 percent increase and the highest number in the commission’s history. The EEOC filed 250 lawsuits, resolved 285 lawsuits, and resolved 104,999 private sector charges during the past fiscal year. Through its combined enforcement, mediation and litigation programs, the EEOC said it secured more than $404 million in monetary awards from employers — the highest level of monetary relief ever obtained by the commission through the administrative process.
