Settlement paid by Wal-Mart in connection with the trampling death last year of a temporary worker at its Valley Stream, New York store. The man was crushed by stampeding shoppers on ‘Black Friday.’ As part of the deal, Wal-Mart agreed to improve crowd management at its New York stores, increase safety efforts and set up a victims’ compensation and remuneration fund. The retailer admitted no guilt.

Amount of workers’ compensation benefits illegally collected by a Maine man who claimed he was too incapacitated to work. Investigators said he had been working under the table for hotels in Saco while collecting the benefits. He was sentenced to eight months in jail. Attorney General Janet Mills is vowing to step up investigations of workers’ compensation fraud.

Amount allegedly stolen by a ring of four identity thieves in Rhode Island. Federal prosecutors say the four obtained credit cards with the stolen personal information of more than 50 victims. The thieves used the cards at casinos, car repair shops and retail stores. To obtain the cards, they first created fake licenses and then requested duplicate cards with the stolen IDs, claiming the original cards were lost.

Amount of fire damage to a Maryland house which was destroyed when an overheated lawn tractor sparked a fire. Fire officials say the tractor was parked in the garage under the house after doing some yard work. Combustible materials near the tractor ignited, touching off the blaze.
