Fine to be paid by General Re Corp., to settle investor claims about its role in a fraudulent transaction involving American International Group Inc. The case centered on a transaction that investigators say allowed AIG to improperly boost its loss reserves by $500 million in 2000 and 2001. Four former General Re executives and a former AIG vice president were convicted on criminal charges last year in connection with the case.

Amount sought by a Maryland woman in a suit filed against a cigarette-maker and the landlord of the home where her mother died in a fire three years ago. Dawn Bunch’s mother, Linda Ford, died in a 2006 fire caused by a cigarette manufactured by Lorillard Tobacco Co. The suit alleges Lorillard designed the product in such a way as to cause an unreasonable risk of fire. It also claims the building’s landlord failed to provide warning devices.
