Of 553 global companies — of all sizes and world regions, including the Middle East — surveyed by The Conference Board have a detailed avian flu pandemic readiness plan in place or are in the process of developing a plan. Of the survey participants, 85 percent began their planning efforts within the last 12 months.

Say no to helmet laws. Michigan is one of 19 states that requires all motorcyclists to wear helmets. Including Pennsylvania, 25 states require helmets only for younger riders. Four states — Colorado, Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire — do not require motorcycle
helmets.

Of motorists are uninsured. That figure is up from the estimated 12.7 percent in 1999, according to an Insurance Research Council (IRC) study.
