Q: I’m the new vice president of talent acquisition for a large regional agency in California. Prior to my arrival, the organization had the ability to recruit, but it was largely by accident than intention. As I get a handle on our openings (which range from 40-90 at any given time), what are the big issues I need to focus on? – Jennifer in California

A: Dear Jennifer, the recruiting history of your company describes 99.9 percent of all independent agencies. You have a tremendous opportunity to usher in organization and strategic planning unlike your firm has ever seen. Presuming they view you as “an agent of change,” then you have buy-in and a blank slate to successfully recruit all types and levels of positions. Your biggest obstacles are the bad habits hiring managers have adopted over the years. Institute a pain-free recruiting process and watch the company break the cycle of reactive recruiting.
