Jefferson City Tornado-Related Insurance Claims Rise to More than $170M
State insurance officials say Jefferson City, Missouri, residents made more than $170 million in insurance claims after a tornado hit the city on May 22.
Missouri Department of Insurance data shows insurers paid out more than $122 million for those claims.
The data shows most of the claims were for residential work, which accounted for more than $43 million in payments. Claims for commercial work received payments of $44 million.
A report released in July by Jefferson City and Cole County said the E3 tornado damaged 516 residential buildings, 82 commercial buildings and 30 government buildings.
Jefferson City’s building department says owners of half the properties damaged have not yet sought permits for repair work.
