Connecticut’s The Hartford Recognized for Sustainability Efforts
The Hartford has been recognized for its leadership status by the CDP, formerly called the Carbon Disclosure Project, and has been named to the 2017 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI). This is the 10th year The Hartford’s sustainability efforts and practices have been commended by the CDP and the sixth year by DJSI.
CDP recognized The Hartford for setting meaningful targets by which the company has reduced, and will continue to reduce, greenhouse gas emissions. The Hartford received an A- on a grading scale ranging from A to F, which is a score achieved by only 18 percent of companies responding to the CDP’s 2017 climate change questionnaire. CDP said The Hartford’s score demonstrated a range of actions to manage climate change in its own operations and beyond.
“As a company in business for more than 200 years, we know what it means to be sustainable, and we understand the importance of sustainability,” said Diane Cantello, head of corporate sustainability at The Hartford, in a company press release. “While stewardship of the planet’s natural resources is very important, sustainability represents much more to us — embodying our character and commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, strengthening our communities, operating with integrity and protecting the environment.”
The CDP runs a global disclosure system that enables companies, cities, states and regions to measure and manage their environmental impacts. The DJSI are the standard for assessing a company’s performance in environmental, social and governance aspects. The indices are maintained collaboratively by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM.
These accolades are in addition to awards the company received for energy conservation. By converting to energy-efficient LED lighting and adding occupancy sensors, the company won two awards in 2017 and conserved enough energy to power approximately 145 homes annually.
The Hartford was the only financial services company to be recognized in 2017 by the U.S. Department of Energy Better Building Alliance’s Interior Lighting Campaign. The Hartford also won a 2017 Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) award, designated by a consortium of building owners and managers and the U.S. Green Building Council.
