Alabama Jury Awards $5.5M to Family of Man Killed in Crane Accident
A west Alabama jury has awarded $5.5 million to relatives of a man who died when a crane toppled over in 2012.
The Tuscaloosa News reports that jurors in Hale County returned the verdict May 17 in the death of 47-year-old Michael Singley of Linden.
Singley was killed when the crane he was operating turned over in July 2012 in Holt. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming Southeastern Crane Inspections LLC had inspected the crane but failed to disclose serious problems with the machine.
Several companies settled claims over the accident, but Southeastern Crane didn’t. The judgment means Southeastern Crane will be responsible for paying $4.5 million.
Family attorney Matt Glover says the verdict is one of the largest in west Alabama in a decade.
