Remembering Myron F. Steves Sr.
Myron Fuller Steves Sr., founder of the Texas independent managing general agency and wholesale insurance broker, Myron Steves, passed away on Aug. 29, 2015, at the age of 103.
Myron was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1912. After graduating from Emory University in 1934 he began a career in insurance.
Myron was awarded the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation in 1949. In 1955, he founded Myron F. Steves &a Company with one employee and $10 in the bank. With offices across Texas, the company now has over 200 employees.
He was a founding member of the Houston chapter of CPCU and served as its president in 1955. He received the Standard Setter Award from the National Society of CPCU and served as president of the Texas Surplus Lines Association. Myron was especially proud of the Outstanding Service Award he received from the Independent Insurance Agents of Houston. That honor is generally awarded to a retail agent, not a wholesale agent.
Myron retired in 1989. His lifelong commitment to the insurance industry will continue through an endowment in his name at the University of Houston – Downtown. .
He was married to Maria Luisa Benteen for 62 years. Maria Luisa died in 2002.
They are survived by their three children and their spouses, Myron F. Steves, Jr. (Buddy) and wife, Rowena; Teresa Steves Skinner and husband, Richard; and Frederick B. Steves and wife, Courtney. They are also survived by grandchildren, Frederick B. Steves, Jr. (Ben) and wife, Andrea; Roy Pollard Steves, Donna Davis, Lori Pack and husband, Mike; Michael Rubin Steves, Joshua Lee Steves, and great-grandchildren, Frederick B. Steves III (Trey), Andrew T. Steves, Jackson F. Steves, and Taylor Sky Pack. They are also survived by step grandchildren Christopher Lawrence, Chrysanthi Lawrence, Anastasia Lawrence, Richard Skinner Jr., and Janna Skinner Holland, and step great-grandchildren, Thorin Schriber, Selene Lawrence, Thalia Lawrence, Richard Skinner III (Richie), Margaret Skinner (Maggie), Patrick Fowler, and Corrie Fowler.
