Utah Comic Con Granted Trademark Amid Legal Battle
The organizers of a Utah comic book convention have been granted a trademark for Salt Lake Comic Con amid a legal battle with the country’s biggest such event in San Diego.
Salt Lake City co-founder Bryan Brandenburg said the trademark announced in July will be decisive in the suit, but attorneys for the established San Diego Comic-Con disagree. The case appears headed for trial after settlement talks broke down earlier this month.
San Diego organizers contend that Salt Lake’s use of “comic con” in the name is federal trademark infringement and makes people think the two conventions are affiliated. Their Utah counterparts say dozens of conventions across the country brand their events that way.
The events feature costumed attendees and the best in movies, television shows, comic books and more.
