New York A.G. Announces Aid for Snowstorm Victims

December 15, 2014

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman recently announced several resources for New Yorkers hit by last month’s historic Buffalo snowstorm, including free help for navigating storm-related issues that could impact homeownership.

Schneiderman met with local leaders in Buffalo on Dec. 3 and announced that he is directing advisors from more than a dozen legal service organizations and housing counseling agencies to assist local residents in resolving outstanding insurance claims and addressing contractor issues. These advisors have been participating in the attorney general’s “Homeowner Protection Program,” which helps homeowners facing foreclosure, but will now make themselves available to residents affected by the snowstorm. Schneiderman said his office also asked banks and utilities to waive late payment fees for residents impacted by last month’s snowstorm, which dumped as much as 7 feet of snow in the region and disrupted mail service for days in some areas. “Many families have been hit hard enough by the weather, and that is why we want to make additional resources available to homeowners and consumers in need,” Schneiderman said.

Local insurance agents have reported receiving claims ranging from roof and wall collapses and auto damages to business interruption.

A State Farm spokesperson said that as of Dec. 8, the company received 1,034 homeowners claims in Buffalo and the surrounding areas in wake of the snowstorm.
