Joplin Rebuilding
A total of 7,500 residential dwellings in the city of Joplin were damaged or destroyed by the May 2011 tornado, according to information on the city’s website. Of those, about 4,000 homes were destroyed. As of July 2013, 85 percent of damaged dwellings had been permitted for reconstruction.
About $837 million has been spent on construction in Joplin since the May 2011 tornado through July 2013, including starts on more than 1,100 new homes, the Associated Press reported
More than two-thirds of the building permits for new homes since the tornado were issued in the tornado zone, according to the AP.
