New Restrictions for Maine Drivers

November 30, 2008

The second of two Maine laws adopted in April to tighten regulations for getting a driver’s license has gone into effect.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says the new law requires license applicants to show they’re living in the U.S. legally. For most residents, he says that will be a simple as showing a birth certificate.

The law that tightens driver’s license requirements came about after negotiations between the governor’s office and the Department of Homeland Security.

The first part went into effect in April requiring Mainers to prove they reside in the state with a tax form or utility bill.
