Senate Committee Moves Quickly on Disaster Relief Bill

January 27, 2008

A Kansas Senate Committee is moving quickly on a proposal to help flood- and tornado-damaged communities rebuild homes. The Ways and Means Committee voted to sponsor the proposal. It would provide $12 million over three years to help communities rebuild homes.

The money would come from Kansas Lottery ticket sales. Committee Chairman and Thayer Republican Dwayne Umbarger said the panel will have a hearing at the end of January. The measure is a response to flooding this summer in southeast Kansas and to tornadoes in May, one of which nearly destroyed the town of Greensburg in southwest Kansas.
