October 11, 2004 by

The Insurance Brokers and Agents of Sacramento will celebrate its 25-year anniversary Big “I” Day Oct. 19 at the Sacramento Convention Center, located in the heart of downtown Sacramento. Featuring more than 120 exhibits and attracting around 750 attendees, this year’s “I” Day will be one of its largest in the 25- year history of the event. It has the support of Zurich North America, the “grand sponsor” for a third consecutive year.

The registration desk will open early at 7:15 a.m., followed by three continuing education seminars each good for three units. The first seminar, entitled “Potpourri of Workers’ Comp Issues,” will be presented by California Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau. Chubb Insurance Cos. will then present “Alternative Risk Transfer,” followed by Zurich and its “Building Insurance Solutions for the Construction Industry” presentation. The exhibit hall will be open after the first seminar closing only for the luncheon at 12:30 p.m. In addition, the “Agent of the Year” and “Associate of the Year” will be awarded plaques followed by prize drawings that will conclude the day at 3 p.m. The cost is $50 per person prior to the day of the event and $65 at the door.

“The ‘I’ Day event is a great opportunity for agents and other industry professionals to get together with one another in a pleasant environment where they can further their education as well as develop longer-term relationships with each other,” said Bob Telford, president of the Insurance Brokers and Agents of Sacramento.

“It’s always fun to put a face on the people that you work with over the phone on a daily basis,” he added. “And it is a great way for us to give back to the community and the industry. The proceeds will be put back into the community in the form of charitable donations and will also fund our advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry.”

Former Air Force fighter pilot and Vietnam veteran Brian Shul will address the attendees this year. Shul served as Foreign Air Advisor for the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, flying 212 air support missions in that time. Nearing the end of the conflict, Shul’s aircraft was shot down into dense jungle near the Cambodian border.

Miraculously surviving the crash, Shul was severely burned by an ensuing fireball as he crawled from the wreckage. He was later rescued by Special Forces and taken to a military hospital in Okinawa, Japan, where he was not expected to live. Defying the odds, Shul lived, and continued his piloting career as he went on to become an instructor at the Air Force’s elite TOPGUN School. After 20 years of service and 5,000 hours in a fighter jet, Shul retired. He has authored five books and is a nationally acclaimed speaker.

“Our committee is made up of many individuals who have volunteered their time year after year. It is because of them that our event is a tremendous success each year,” said Jim Bender, vice president of Insurance Brokers and Agents of Sacramento.
