100 Years Young

January 23, 2023 by

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Insurance Journal’s flagship print magazine. While some say print is dead, we know better. We still love seeing words on paper, just as songwriters like to hear their lyrics sung. And, fortunately, apparently enough of you still like print, too. We hear you.

Insurance Journal launched its legacy some time in 1923. While the precise date of the magazine’s first issue remains a mystery, what Insurance Journal has become is no secret.

Insurance Journal’s mission has always been to deliver the most up-to-date property/casualty industry news and information. Since the day its first publication rolled off the presses, Insurance Journal’s print magazine has changed, matured and grown from a regional Southern California magazine to a national brand with five regional editions. The magazine offers targeted reporting on industry trends and insurance markets along with expert advice from coverage specialists and agency management advisers. Plus, insurance market directories, like this issue’s E&S Directory, to help connect independent agencies with the right market for their clients, and our exclusive reports including the Top 100 Agencies, Agency Salary Survey, Young Agents Survey and Best Agencies to Work For. This year, we’re adding two new reports: Top Agency Account Managers & CSRs in America and Best Wholesalers to Work For.

This century-old print magazine is now the grandparent of a business-to-business media family of print and digital offerings known as Wells Media Group. The family includes InsuranceJournal.com, which attracts the largest P/C insurance audience in the world — nearly one million page views per month. Also Carrier Management for P/C executives; Claims Journal for claims professionals; MyNewMarkets for brokers looking for markets; the Academy of Insurance for everyone who wants to learn; IJTV for those who enjoy, let’s call it, younger media.

Wells Media Group is always changing. It is now a 100% employee-owned organization. Those of us who now own Wells weren’t around 100 years ago but we still take pride in our 1923 roots, and are very proud to still be playing a role in the P/C insurance industry.

Of course, we would not have lasted even a year without you. Thank you for being there for us over the years. We hope to be around for you for another 100 years, at least, in print, online, video, even in the metaverse.

That’s worth singing about. We suggest, “Happy Birthday to You.”
