The percent of homeowners insurance claims that have been settled in Louisiana and Mississippi one year after Hurricane Katrina, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The I.I.I. estimates that more than 993,000 homeowners insurance claims filed with non-government entities have been settled in the two states, totaling nearly $15.5 billion. Home-owners insurers ultimately will pay more than one million homeowners claims totaling $16.4 billion from Hurricane Katrina.

Six in 10 large and mid-sized U.S. businesses obtained property terrorism insurance during 2005, a dramatic increase from the 2003 average of 27 percent and up from 50 percent in 2004. The cost of property terrorism insurance in 2005 also dropped 25 percent on average be-low 2004 rates., according to a report from Marsh Inc. based on data compiled from 1,623 businesses and government entities that purchased or renewed property policies in 2005. The percentage of companies buying the coverage varied by region: about 67 percent of firms in the Northeast and 58 percent of Midwest firms secured property terrorism insurance in 2005, compared with 53 percent in the West, and 50 percent in the South. Financial institutions, real estate firms, and health care facilities had the highest take-up rates, each exceeding 75 percent.

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas reports it is delivering education and training to more than 6,000 individuals during some 300 days of instruction per year. The latest addition to the family of products is a quarterly Web cast, in which experts in various fields present often complex material to IIAT members over the Web at no cost to participants. The mainstay of IIAT’s curriculum continues to be its internal staff and contract instructors, all of whom hold university degrees and are well practiced in the industry.
